Rhule: Panthers “trend” towards the departure of Newton against WFT
Carolina Panthers coach Matt Rhule has not officially picked his starting quarterback for this weekend’s game against the Washington soccer team, but it increasingly looks like Cam Newton will be starting. on PJ Walker.
Rhule said he didn’t want to reveal his game plan too much to the media, instead insisting that Newton and Walker would be ready to play.
“I probably won’t pull the trigger until later,” Rhule said, via Sports Illustrated. “I was pretty transparent the other day that we wanted to push (Cam) into this role. I think it’s good for our team, but we are also preparing PJ. Like I said, I think the game plan is wise, we could see a myriad of different things happening. “
Even if both QBs are prepared, it wouldn’t be surprising if Newton took the start.
While Walker did the heavy lifting against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, it was Newton who made headlines upon his return to his former team, completing three of four passes for eight yards and a touchdown in a 34-10 win.
Walker, who was selected to start last week’s game in place of injured Sam Darnold, completed 22 of 29 passes for 167 yards and an interception.
