NEW DELHI: The central government has approved a plan to produce more than five lakhs of AK-203 assault rifles in Korwa in Uttar Pradesh Amethi, in what official sources have described as a push-pull effort of thumb to self-sufficiency in defense manufacturing.

Uttar Pradesh is fast becoming a hub for defense manufacturing in India, they said.

A source said, “This reflects the ever-growing paradigm shift in the acquisition of defense from (global) purchasing to manufacturing in India. This endeavor will be carried out in partnership with Russia and reflects the deepening of the partnership between the two countries in the defense sector. “

The project will provide business opportunities to various MSMEs and other defense industries for the supply of raw materials and components, which will lead to new employment opportunities, they said.

The 7.62 X 39mm AK-203 rifles will replace the in-service INSAS rifle introduced more than three decades ago.

The AK-203 assault rifles, with an effective range of 300 meters, are modern, lightweight, robust and easy-to-use assault rifles with proven technology that will enhance the combat potential of soldiers to meet challenges. adequately address current and anticipated operational challenges, the sources noted.

They will improve the operational effectiveness of the Indian Army in counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations.

The project will be implemented by a specialized joint venture called Indo-Russian Rifles Private Ltd (IRRPL).

It was created with the old OFB [now Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Limited (AWEIL) and Munitions India Limited (MIL)] from India and Rosoboronexport (RoE) and concern Kalashnikov from Russia, they said.
